Whisper AI — Weekly Update | 5 March 2026
March 5, 2026 This week's release introduces two significant additions to Whisper AI: multi-provider support, bringing external model options alongside the core on-device experience, and data migration support to ensure your conversation history carries across version updates cleanly.
Multi-Provider Support
Whisper AI now supports connecting to external model providers, including OpenRouter and custom providers via industry-standard protocols. This means users can choose to run fully on-device — completely private, with no data leaving the device — or route to a more powerful external model when the task calls for it. This is an explicit, opt-in feature. The on-device experience remains the default and is unchanged. When using an external provider, data is processed by that third party — Whisper AI surfaces this clearly so users can make an informed choice for each conversation.
The on-device model remains exactly what it has always been: fully private, no external servers, no data collection, no exceptions. We'll be expanding provider options over time. More detail on our thinking behind this decision is available in a separate post on the Whisper AI blog.
Data Migration Support
Previous versions of Whisper AI did not preserve conversation history when updating to a new release. This release adds proper data migration support, so upgrading between versions now carries your conversations across automatically. Your history is yours to keep.
